Social media plays such a big role in our lives and is often slated for its negative sides and effects on our lives. So much of our time is consumed by scrolling endlessly through different social media platforms.

I’d like to think that I could live without social media. I can go a day or two without checking Facebook, but eventually I fall back into the trap of having nothing to do for half an hour and find myself looking through the numerous statuses, pictures and videos. I’m not someone that posts a lot on social media and I’ve always said that it’s because my life isn’t interesting enough, but honestly it’s because it’s not the first thing I think to do. I never really understood why people share every part of their lives over social media, but I’ve come to realise that it’s probably because our lives have become consumed by this urge to make it seem that we have the best life going, that we are popular, that we are doing something with our lives, the list goes on.

I’m not against social media in the slightest, I think its great and it is an amazing way to connect with people all over the world, to share our thoughts and adventures. However, I do believe that a lot of people are consumed by social media and post things that only show the side of them that they want everyone to see rather than the honest version of themselves. This is my biggest bugbear with social media; that it has created a second world where reality rarely exists.

Whilst this is one of the aspects of social media that I think is negative, it’s a personal gripe that boils down to me not like people who pretend to be something they’re not. I personally don’t see the point in pretending to be someone that you’re not, but if it makes others feel better about themselves then who am I to judge?
