I’ve been struggling a bit with the lockdown restrictions recently and my general state of restlessness so I decided that today was going to be a self-care day because I rarely have them and I feel like a little TLC is in order. For me, self-care isn’t just about making myself feel better but also about having something to do to occupy my myself. So here are 5 of my favourite things to do when I’m feeling a the need for a bit of self-love!
I don’t always have my nails done but it’s one of the things that makes me feel a bit better about myself when I’ve been feeling down or just want something to do. I like that I can choose any colour I fancy and get creative if I want to. Painting my nails is normally one of the first things I do when I feel a bit down or need to occupy myself for an hour.
2. Favourite TV show/film
They say that we find comfort in watching the same shows and films over and over again because we know the outcome. One of my go-to shows to watch when I’m having a self-care day is Gilmore Girls. This is one of my all-time favourite shows and is something that I have watched numerous times over the years. Sometimes you just can’t beat watching something that you know is going to cheer you up, make you laugh or just take you to a happy place where you can relax and feel like you don’t have a care in the world. If I’m not in the mood to be transported to Stars Hollow I’ll either choose a comedy or a documentary. Depending on how I want to relax will influence what I choose to watch. Sometimes you can’t beat watching something that will make you laugh and other times there is nothing better than a show that captures your attention and engulfs you.
3. Face mask
I’m not normally a face mask, super into skincare type of person, but when in need of a little TLC it’s one of my favourite ways to relax. To achieve the maximum level of relaxation I often light a couple of candles as well. There are few things as calming as laying down with a face mask on, with some candles lit and watching something comforting on the tv.
4. Comfort food
I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I’m an emotional eater, but there are some days when comfort foods are definitely needed. I have a number of favourtie meals and snacks that are some of my go-to feel better foods. I really enjoy cooking so if a meal is something I’m going to enjoy making as well as eating then I’m on a winning streak! I’m a big lover of spicy foods so it’s no surprise that some of my favourite meals are packed full of spices and heat. As well as comfort foods in the form of meals, I also have a number of go-to snacks that just hit the spot. I’m a sucker for crisps, but I can’t turn down a chocolate digestive or a chocolate bar either. There are few things I like more than being cuddled up with a good film and all the snacks I could want when feeling the need for some relaxation and TLC.
5. Go for a walk/read a book
I’m a fairly active person and enjoy spending time outside. If the weather is nice I will always be found outside, whether I’m just sitting in the garden or exploring and enjoying the great outdoors. One of the big things I find myself doing when I need a pick-me-up is going for a walk. However, with the lock down restrictions currently in place, I haven’t been able to walk in some of my favourite places so have had to improvise. When I haven’t been able to go for a walk for whatever reason, I often find that curling up with a book is a good runner up. I find reading a book is also a good way to pass the time as I’m able to be transported to another world, whether it be Victorian Britain or solving a murder in a far off land.
There are always things we can do to make us feel better when we need to relax or a bit of TLC. Sometimes doing nothing is the best remedy, but this isn’t often the case for me as I’m quite a restless person so doing nothing is often a one-day-wonder.
